How to Choose the Best Berries
Posted by Katie Straw on Jul 1, 2014
Planning on buying some berries? Then it’s time you knew the basics.
When they’re ripe:
- Blueberries: Late May – October
- Blackberries: June – August
- Raspberries: May – September
- Strawberries: April – June
Look for berries that are:
- Deeply colored (especially blackberries and raspberries)
- Tinged with a frosty-white color (only blueberries)
- Free of mold or brown patches
- Firm and plump
- Able to move freely in their container when you give ‘em a little shake
Store them:
- In the fridge, loosely covered and consume them as soon as possible, as they only last 3-5 days max
- And wash only just before consuming
- In the freezer (see here for directions)
