Healthiest Halloween Candies
Posted by Katie Straw on Oct 29, 2013
Unlike some people, we believe that all things are okay in moderation. So, while a few of the houses in the neighborhood may be known for handing out raisins on Halloween, we know that's just not what the holiday is about. It's about displaying your creativity and receiving candy in return for your totally fly costume. Obviously though, some candies are bound to be healthier than others, so if you're looking for less damaging options this Halloween, stick to these sweets:
- Fun Sized Peanut M&Ms
They're peanut centers so they can't be that bad, right? Unlike other fun-size treats, these M&Ms deliver a satisfying amount of sweet and salty chocolate-drenched peanut goodness at just 90 calories and boasts a decent amount of protein for a candy, anyway.
- Midgee Tootsies
One small tootsie roll contains a mere 23 calories and, when compared to other candies, they're more satisfying because they take FOREVER to chew. The only downside is that they feel like they shouldn't be that bad for you given their size, so you end up eating 5.
- Mike and Ike Mini
Irresistibly chewy and bursting with vibrant fruit flavor (some even created from real fruit juice), these oblong candies make for a pretty refreshing treat among a bounty of chocolate slabs. Plus, they boast only 50 calories and 0 grams of fat, so they're okay in our book.
- Raisinettes
Surprisingly, these aren't super healthy, but they do actually have raisins in them. The small snack-packs have only 67 calories, which is great, but with that comes 10 grams of sugar, which is not so great. However, if you can find anti-oxidant rich dark chocolate packs, it's a total win.
- Mini Three Musketeers
Unlike a fair amount its competitors, this candy bar isn't chock full of nuts, filled with gooey caramel, or oozing butterscotch. Instead, it's composed of a thin milk chocolate shell that wraps around a whipped chocolate center and, like every other whipped food, it's lighter, which generally means fewer calories (in this case, 63 to be exact).
- Caramel Apple Pop
The beauty of lollipops and hard candies in general is that they take a long time to consume, meaning that by the time you finish one, you don't usually feel the desire to go back for more. While all lollies are great options, we really like Caramel Apple pops in particular because they're slightly more season-appropriate and, you know, there's caramel. Calories? A mere 60.
- Mini Packet of Jelly Beans
So cute and fun and colorful and gluten free! Actually, they're peanut-free too, which makes them a great contender for Halloween handouts, since a lot of kids have allergies. With only 4 calories per bean, those small 3.1-ounce packs are a total treat!
- Hershey's Kisses
Holidays wouldn't be holidays without these romantic morsels of slow-melting milk chocolate. And lucky for us, they're totally guilt-free, as 3 of 'em pack in only 67 calories.
