10 Things You Didn’t Know About Chocolate Chip Cookies

In honor of National Chocolate Chip Day (aka the best day EVER), we decided to get to get better acquainted with our favorite type of cookie, beloved chocolate chip! So we did some research and thought we’d share with you these irresistibly sweet fun facts:
- In 1987, Chester Soling held a contest to find the greatest recipe for chocolate chip cookies. He got well over 2,600 responses.
- Before owning the Toll House Inn and creating the chocolate chip cookie, Ruth Wakefield was a dietitian.
- Ruth Wakefield sold her recipe to Nestle and they began manufacturing chocolate chips in 1939 under the name Toll House, in honor of the Inn.
- Half of all homemade cookies are chocolate chip.
- The world’s largest ever chocolate chip cookie weighed in at 38,000 pounds, was 102 feet in diameter, and was made with a whopping 30,000 eggs.
- Allowing chocolate chip cookie dough to rest overnight is said to yield superior flavor.
- In the Middle East, chocolate chip cookies are commonly served topped with chocolate sauce.
- Wally Amos, known now for his Famous Amos cookies, was the talent agent who discovered Simon and Garfunkel.
- Chocolate chip cookies are one of four delicious foods enjoyed by even the pickiest of eaters. (The other three are fried chicken, French fries, and macaroni and cheese.)
