When cold weather hits, so do our cravings for delicious, comforting foods. In winter, we crave starchy foods that remind us of home cooking. Here are some of our favorite picks for the best comfort foods for winter.
Fried Chicken
Even though fried chicken is a tasty addition to any summer picnic basket, it‘s really appreciated in the winter! The crispy skin and greasy meat satisfy even the most intense comfort food cravings. Fried chicken tastes especially good with mashed potatoes – another classic comfort food.
Meatloaf
Meatloaf is a classic American dish that seems to hit the spot when it gets cold! Ground beef is mixed with spices, breadcrumbs, and eggs to create a dish the whole family will love. Serve it with homemade gravy and a generous helping of homemade mashed potatoes and you just might have the perfect winter meal.
Mashed Potatoes
Mashed potatoes are a classic comfort food, and they seem to taste even better in the winter! Whether you like your potatoes creamy or a little chunky, they’re a welcome addition to any meal.
Spaghetti and Meat Sauce
Spaghetti Bolognese, or spaghetti and meat sauce, is a dish that is typically reserved for the winter months in Italy. We’ve continued the tradition here in the United States and tend to crave spaghetti and meat sauce in the cooler months.
Macaroni and Cheese
Macaroni and cheese is another perfect dish for the winter months. Whether you make it from scratch or prepare it from a box, this is the ultimate food for any pasta and cheese lover. This baked version is an easy twist on this classic favorite. You can use any melting cheese that you want, but mild cheddar is one of our favorites.
Lasagna
Lasagna is also a delicious comfort food for the winter months. Thick slices of pasta are topped with tomato sauce and plenty of cheese and then baked in the oven until the cheese is perfectly melted and the noodles are cooked all the way through. Wash it down with a nice glass of red wine and it’s enough to warm any cold winter night!
Stew
Somehow, stew just doesn’t taste as good when the weather is warmer. Whether the stew is made from beef, chicken, or even just vegetables, it’s a comforting treat that everyone loves! This recipe uses chunks of beef, potatoes, and carrots to make a warming winter classic.
Chicken Noodle Soup
Classic chicken noodle soup is about as comforting as it gets! Not only does it help keep the body warm on a cold day, but it’s also the food of choice when sick. Make a big batch of this soup when you first feel a cold coming on so that it can bring you comfort while you feel under the weather!
